Astrology of Coronavirus: A Timeline

In this article we’ll take a look through an astrological timeline of 2020 and discover the outstanding synchronisation of planetary configurations with world events. We are living through some of the most significant planetary configurations of our lifetime and the Coronavirus pandemic has opened our eyes to how astrology plays out on the global stage.

I will also address the big question. Can astrology indicate when the Coronavirus pandemic will end?

What Could 2021 have in Store for Us?

The International Trigger – Uranus Stations Direct

11th January 2020

Astrological Implication

When an outer planet stations direct we will often experience a surge of forward motion coloured by the energy of that planet. Imagine how the engine of speed boat displaces the water before surging forward. This is often experienced as a brewing sensation, but Uranus is quick off the mark and concerned more with revelations, surprises and quick escalations. Indeed, many of us feel that this situation popped up out of nowhere and hit the ground running!

Corresponding World Events

Uranus (and Mars) are considered to be fairly exact triggers. This day specifically signified the first report by Chinese state media of the first known death, a 61-year old man who was a regular customer of the market in Wuhan. The world’s ears pricked up!

Crisis and Contraction – Saturn conjunct Pluto

12th January 2020

*This conjunction will not be exact again but I believe we will feel its presence until Saturn leaves Capricorn for good on at the end of 2020. This energy will give way to the Saturn-Uranus square which will endure into 2021.

Astrological Implication

Almost to the day that Uranus stationed direct Saturn made an exact conjunction to Pluto. There is a tremendous sense of compression with this contact. Like an erupting volcano plugged from the top, Uranus came along and tore the cork out. Suddenly we had a cosmic release of the Saturn-Pluto energy, a sense of what was to come began filtering into the consciousness of mankind globally.

When Saturn (constraint, deprivation, authoritarianism, fear) and Pluto (power, extremes, breakdown, transformation) come together, which they do approximately every 33 years, we experience intense contraction. Our survival instincts are awakened in response to catastrophic change or a feeling of victimisation. As you can imagine, this can often breed violence. An appreciation of the severity of a situation usually spurs a collective response to try and protect a way of life. However, a sense of profound duty usually births authoritarian impulses and freedoms are often taken or relinquished in response to what is seen as a greater cause.

Corresponding World Events

The exact conjunction marked the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. Thus far we have seen the worldwide lockdown of countries in an international effort to contain the virus. The implementation of unprecedented social restriction measures and incredible pressure put on the global financial system, the consequences of which we will feel for many years to come.

Previous Saturn-Pluto Conjunctions

December 1980 – October 1984 – Iran/Iraq war, Falkland War, Soviet War in Afganistan

June 1946 – September 1948 – The Cold War. The Nuclear Arms Race. Testing of the atomic bomb in the South Pacific.

August 1913 – June 1916 – Build up to World War 1

Universal Compassion – Jupiter sextile Neptune

20th February 2020

Astrological Implications

Thank goodness for this aspect!

Jupiter is still a month away from joining Saturn and Pluto so let’s not consider its qualities (expansion, magnitude, growth, abundance) in relation to the spread of the virus just yet. The sextile to Neptune instead has a much more pleasant message of collective compassion and philanthropy. The notion that we are all in this life together brings natural empathy for others and an altruistic drive to give something back to humanity. When these two planets are in any aspect there’s the dawning realisation that through giving to others you are in fact feeding yourself on a spiritual level.

Without this aspect, I believe the strict/authoritarian measures would not have been as well adhered to come the transit of Mars in March (see below). It would have resulted in more combative reactions, with people taking instinctive action (Mars-Pluto) against the limitations placed upon them by Saturn.

Corresponding World Events

February and through into March saw some of the most altruistic and uplifting news stories of this period. 750,000 people answered the call to volunteer to support the NHS in the UK whilst large organisations and celebrities donated millions to aid in the fight against the virus. We also saw engineering organisations such as the F1 teams and Dyson join in the pressing effort to manufacture ventilators.

It’s Happening! – Mars conjunct Jupiter, Pluto and Saturn

20th March – 2nd April

Astrological Implications

Transiting Mars is fast moving and is only in aspect to another planet or angle for 2-3 days. In this instance however it contacted the succession of planets in Capricorn and so the general Mars influence would have been felt over the period of 12 days or so. As with the initial Uranus influence on 11th January, this time period may well have felt like the next push forward in string of events, or as ‘things coming to a head’. If Uranus planted the seed, Mars let grow the shoot.

Mars acts as a catalyst, it has a forthright and assertive energy and during this period people would have started to feel directly impacted the themes of the Jupiter-Saturn-Pluto stellium in Capricorn. Mars however experiences Saturn as limiting, one says move and other says no! Whilst Mars in aspect to Pluto can be quite an intense energy, the war-lord stirring the deep survival instincts of Pluto. People may well have been experiencing very raw emotions during this week, anger, frustration and fear. Jupiter serving as means of expansion in this instance and bringing in themes such as international relations and widespread generosity, but more on that below.

Corresponding World Events

It was from mid to the end of March that we began to see the majority of national lockdowns come into place across the world. Travel restrictions also became increasingly widespread, with the grounding of whole fleets of airlines. It was the 20th March exactly when Mars made a conjunction to Jupiter (generosity, pleasure, mass-socialisation) that day the government closed pubs, cafes and bars here in the UK and Australia. On the 21st the Chancellor promised £350bn in aid for British bunisnesses, “whatever it takes,” he said.

By March the 23rd the UK was in national lockdown and here in Britain we witnessed the Prime minister announce some of the most draconian restrictions on individual liberty that the UK had ever seen. By the end of March 32 out of 50 US states were in lockdown in the US. Emergency (Mars) legislation (Saturn) was rushed through parliament to grant new powers (Pluto) to tackle the spread of the virus.

Proportion and Death: Jupiter Conjunct Pluto

5th April 2020

Astrological Implication

Here Jupiter is exposing the sheer magnitude of the situation. When it crosses Pluto it serves to blow Pluto characteristics out of proportion. Think of it this way instead of upheaval, we have mass upheaval, escalated breakdown, elevated death, widespread transformation and titanic power struggles.

Jupiter is concerned with authenticity and Pluto with that which is hidden or beneath the surface. When these meet we usually experience revelation, the uncovering of the truth in situations. Jupiter being widespread is associated with international matters, bringing upheaval to more than the immediate locality.

Corresponding World Events

This unsurprisingly coincided with the peak of the global pandemic. The number of cases and deaths increasing day on day, with the highest recorded number of deaths jumping by 980 in 24 hours on April 10th in the UK. The magnitude (Jupiter) of the crisis (Pluto) was, at this point, clear for all to see.

What happened in the past when these archetypes conjoined?

When Pluto was in Sagittarius we experienced the effects of international (Jupiter/Sagittarius) terrorism (Pluto) More recently, when Jupiter travelled through Scorpio we saw the rise of the Me too movement, the revelation of the truth (Jupiter) behind a widespread misue of power (Pluto/Scorpio)

Societal Reform – Saturn enters Aquarius

7th April 2020

Astrological Implication

Saturn has moved from Capricorn, where it was comfortable and efficient in its ruling sign, to Aquarius. This is uncomfortable territory for Saturn. In summary, Aquarius is future orientated and concerned with innovation and social justice. This radical energy does not combine well with the traditional values of Saturn that seek to preserve the tried and tested systems and practices that have served us in the past.

So, this combination encourages steady reformation and the cautious establishment of a new ways of doing things. An innovative approach to upgrading systems and practices so that they better serve society. Grit, determination and hard work are necessary in order to create something for the collective benefit. Under this placement it would not be unheard of for new inventions and societal reform to take root.

This can go one of two ways because Saturn dampens the Aquarian spirit and the Aquarian drive pushes Capricorn values out of their comfort zone. On one hand this can result in limitation on freedoms and a sense of frustration at being unable to take control of one’s own future. When oppressed Aquarius reacts with revolutionary impulses and we often see sudden challenges to order, processes and authority. Alternatively, Saturn prizes security and seeks to build systems that protect values and ways of life. In Aquarius Saturn is confronted with the impulse to change and this can be experienced as threatening to its core desire to preserve that which has served to give stability. In response a structured effort to oppress expression of counter sentiments can be made.

Corresponding World Events

By this point millions of people across the globe were experiencing a state of national lockdown. Tremendous limitations had been put on personal freedoms; people only permitted to leave the house for one hour of exercise each day or to get essentials such as food and medication. The Police were granted the power to force people suspected of being infected into isolation, or to fine those who were found to be breaking social distancing instructions. We began seeing authoritarian measures being taken that many of us would not have experienced in our lifetime!

What does astrology suggest about what will happen next?

First, I want to remind you that astrology cannot determine what will take place in the future. It can be used to give insight into the archetypal themes that will be evident and to discern when climatic periods will be.

The Retrograde Season: Increasing the Chances of Long Term Success

26th April 2020 – 13th September 2020

From the end of April through to May we see all the key players turning retrograde. Events in the outside world will slow in their momentum giving people some well-deserved breathing space. The Coronavirus itself will likely take a step back from the limelight. We will experience an easing of the planetary expressions mentioned above and, dare I say it, we will experience a taste of normality again.

When all planets are direct, it’s go go go! We fall into very reactive modes of behaviour and our approach to life is often frantic. It feels like we’re ‘always on the backfoot’. Retrograde season is an opportunity to process, clarify and plan.

Organisations and governments are permitted an opportunity to reflect on what’s happened; envision a course for the future and plan a strategy. The opportunity, if used constructively, will allow us to move forward in a pro-active manner and being pre-emptive of future scenarios. This period may be quiet but it can be used to increase the likelihood of our achieving our long-term goals.

Tighten your Belts Again! – Jupiter Conjunct Pluto and Saturn

From mid-September (Reaching impact between 13th November 2020 – 21st December 2020)

That these planets come together again suggests that the themes experienced at the tail end of 2019 will endure through until 2021 (the immediate after effects up until 2023.) The big concern here is that we will experience a repeat of the mid-January to mid-April situation. I admit, there will likely be a resurgence of the same energy and the time will be fraught, but not necessarily equally so. Second contacts do not manifest in the same manner as the first… if we were paying attention that is!

If you need to refer back to:

Saturn conjunct Pluto

Jupiter conjunct Pluto

Mars triggering all Jupiter, Saturn and Pluto in quick succession

The first hit has a novelty value, this impact is experienced as foreign and we often feel unprepared to manage it effectively. By the second contact (assuming it is the final contact) the energy has now been rendered recognisable. We have assimilated the information and are generally able to better manage the situation.

Will the virus escalate again?

Despite being able to clearly mark the nature of experience and time-period using astrology, we cannot determine how the exact situation will manifest. Let’s consider the broader themes of this period to help us keep an open mind.

Inflated responses to fear of change and threat to security

Constriction of freedoms

Widespread / international crisis and pressure on relations

The breakdown and consequent transformation of systems and processes

Unveiling of truth and the desire to contain it.

It’s easy to see how this could indicate another collective attempt to limit the disruption of a repeat rise in the outbreak. However, this configuration could result in the unveiling of information that puts such strain on international relations that we see a complete reformation of how large organisations, or even countries, work together. My point is, we just can’t say how the dynamic will manifest just yet. Remember, astrology doesn’t trump free-will!

The level of impact this will have will depend largely on the work done during the retrograde season. Have we learnt from our mistakes? Have we realigned our intentions? Did we use the time wisely to ensure a proactive response to the potential challenges ahead? You could consider this time to be the final exam, an opportunity to prove what we have learnt (or to feel the consequences of what we haven’t!)

What Could 2021 Have in Store for Us?

Good news, early in the new year we should see the ebbing of this earth-shattering energy. Pluto is then left relatively undisturbed in Capricorn whilst Saturn and Jupiter plough forward into Aquarius and square off with Uranus!

Might we see hard work payoff with innovative breakthroughs? Could Saturn in Aquarius indicate a time of austerity? Maybe even themes of social justice will come to the fore, but more on that in my next article….
